One of the
five magical elements of story, the hole offers us supernatural
conditions, or magically natural conditions, in which to accomplish
a task or discover a foe. The hole will take us beyond heaven
and earth, into other worlds, into other lifetimes. Holes, holes,
holes – to fall into, climb out of, or be fed from. Holes
are the beginning and the end.
